Earthquake Today Rattles Los Angeles- What We Know So Far

This quake, initially reported as a magnitude 5.1, was later downgraded to 4.9 by the US Geological Survey (USGS). Despite the downgrade, the tremor was significant enough to be felt widely across Southern California and even as far east as Las Vegas, Nevada.

The earthquake struck at a depth of nearly five miles, indicating a moderately deep seismic event. Within minutes of the primary quake, aftershocks followed with magnitudes of 3.5 and 2.7. These aftershocks, although weaker, added to the unease of residents already startled by the initial tremor.

One of the notable areas that felt the quake was Burbank, home to the offices of Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN's parent company. Employees there described the quake starting as a slow roll, which then intensified over about 20 seconds. The experience in Burbank mirrors reports from across the region, where the quake's effects were felt in varying degrees of intensity.

In a separate but related event, a weaker earthquake was recorded on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at 5:16 PM local time, approximately 5.3 miles west of Pomona, Los Angeles County. This quake, with a magnitude of 2.5 and a depth of nearly 12 kilometers, was confirmed by the USGS. While it caused only very weak shaking, it served as a reminder of the seismic activity in the area. Reports indicated that the shaking was barely felt by most, with only four reports of feeling the quake coming in.

Nearby locations like Diamond Bar, situated just 3.7 miles southeast of the epicenter, experienced mild tremors. The clear skies and warm weather at the time of the quake were in stark contrast to the sudden jolt that caught many off guard.

The recent seismic activity highlights the ever-present risk of earthquakes in California. Residents are reminded of the importance of being prepared for such natural events. Earthquake preparedness includes having an emergency kit, securing heavy furniture, and knowing safe spots within buildings to take cover during a quake.
